Patterson 85AW - More Cabinet Work

Here is the Patterson cabinet after stripping.  The damage to the top (burn), and other issues become more evident.  What wasn't evident immediately was the fine maple veneer on the front edges.  The radio has a highly figured butt walnut front, book matched, with the maple trimmed edges and zebrano accents near the bottom -- a very high end piece!  The top is walnut veneer, sides are solid poplar.  The construction of the radio is similar to many of the Gilfillan sets I have owned, which were also made in Los Angeles.

Another interesting thing about the cabinet is that it is entirely screwed together.  This means I could take it apart to fix various issues, the most glaring being the warped bottom edge.  Once the front panel was separated from the bottom, it would be much easier to glue and clamp.  So the next step,  I unscrewed all the pieces.

Here is what the cabinet looks like in pieces:

Each panel was screwed into another panel.  The front did have some glue holding it on, but it was coming apart from the water damage.  It was pretty easy to get the front off using a putty knife and a hammer.  A few light taps and it came right off.

You can clearly see the warping on the front panel in the picture to the left.  The radio clearly got wet at some point, causing the veneer and underlayment to expand and warp.

This will be fixed with glue and pressure via clamps.  There is also a considerable amount of damage to the zebrano trim on the panel.  That will either have to be patched or replaced.
